Program Description:
Professional services firms, like law, accounting, advisory, and IT consulting, present unique problems for valuation professionals. The value of an interest in a service firm arises in transaction, tax, and dispute settings. Most valuation practitioners themselves operate in professional firms.
A key issue in valuing service firm interests is whether the client goodwill attaches to the practitioner or the firm. That's the first step in the valuation of the interest in the firm.
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- Recognize industries and practices where there is a need for valuing interests
- Recognize the importance of separating corporate and firm goodwill
- Identify the characteristics of the firm where corporate goodwill may be present such as size, client portfolio, and revenue generation
- Determine how to separately value the personal and corporate portions
- Identify reliable sources and methods for valuing interests in service firms
- Determine how to effectively communicate the analysis
