Program Description:
In today’s rapidly changing economy, valuation professionals face challenges unlike any before. Artificial intelligence, inflation, global trade conflicts, and evolving regulations are transforming the way we analyze and defend value. NACVA’s Tracking Value in the Age of Disruption takes a bold, investigative approach to these issues—inviting participants to step into the role of financial detective. Led by Lari Masten and an expert panel including Janae Castell, Rick Gray, and Carla Nunes, this dynamic session uses real-world case studies and interactive “crime scene” scenarios to uncover how global disruption, intergenerational shifts, and emerging technologies influence valuation.
The course explores real events that have shaken the industry—from the pandemic’s impact on tech-sector multiples to the Matter of Weber case, where an expert’s misuse of AI led to testimony being thrown out. Participants will learn to defend methodologies when historical data no longer holds, apply human oversight to AI-assisted analyses, and interpret how courts are responding to expert reliance on algorithmic tools. Contrasting cautionary tales with success stories such as the AI-assisted uncovering of the €1.9 billion Wirecard fraud, this course demonstrates how responsible innovation can strengthen both forensic and valuation work when paired with professional judgment and transparency.
More than a technical update, Tracking Value in the Age of Disruption is a call to leadership. It equips professionals to balance automation with accountability, ensuring their work remains defensible, ethical, and credible in an age of uncertainty. By mastering new tools, understanding evolving standards under Frye and Daubert, and maintaining unimpeachable neutrality, participants will be prepared to thrive in the digital frontier of valuation.
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- Determine valuation challenges in volatile markets and identify sustainable long-term assumptions
- Recognize how to defend methodologies amid shifting benchmarks and justify post-crisis adjustments
- Determine how to integrate AI responsibly while maintaining transparency and human oversight
- Identify how to prepare expert reports that withstand cross-examination and explain AI-assisted methods clearly
- Apply Frye and Daubert standards to modern, technology-driven analyses
- Recognize ways to enhance ethical judgment and credibility in a profession transformed by disruption
