Program Description:
Tax law impacts the after-tax cash flows and investment rates of return of businesses and their owners. Consequently, tax law changes affect business valuations and the resulting indications of value. This is particularly true when the subject changes are both temporary and permanent in nature and affect C corps, PTEs and their respective ownership interests in similar and dissimilar ways. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act contains all of these types of changes and has fundamentally altered the way business valuations are conducted in 2018 and beyond. This presentation will address the temporary and permanent provisions of the TCJA and their impact on the valuation of C corps and PTEs. Specific models will be presented that address the issues.
After completing this course, attendees will be able to:
- Identify the impact of the permanent reduction of the corporate income tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent in the cost of capital and cash flow projections
- Recognize the permanent limitation on the deductibility of business interest expense in assessing the capital structure, cost of capital, and cash flow projections
- Calculate the value of temporary bonus depreciation for purchases of qualified property
- Describe the impact of the temporary limitation of individual deductions for state and local taxes on the values of C corps and PTEs
- Recognize the impact of the temporary changes in the individual income tax rate on the values of C corps and PTEs
- Describe the impact of the qualified business income deduction on the values of service and non-service PTEs
