Chief Operations Officer’s Report: Essentials—Fourth Quarter 2023
Brien K. Jones
Chief Operations Officer and Executive Vice President of Business Development
A guiding principle at the core of NACVA|GACVA's decades-long service to our global members is to provide access to an array of tools and resources that would typically come with a hefty price tag.
I often hear from our members and from the staff at HQ that there is a vast array of resources, tools, training, publications, and support services being provided, and that it is hard to keep track of it all. I could fill pages and pages in an attempt to introduce and explain them all, but if you are like me, sometimes you just want to know what is essential.

Of the many dozens of benefits extended to members, here are a few that will save you time, save you money, give you practical advice and guidance, and that will keep you abreast of the news and developments in our global profession.

Industry and Metro Reports
As a professional valuator, you need to understand your client’s industry and local economics. The reports provided are “archived”, meaning they are from previous custom research projects for specific industries and metro areas. They are not current, but do provide very valuable data and analysis, and include bibliographies so you can go directly to the source to find current data. You can use these reports as templates to create your own.
There may be times when you need to normalize an owner's compensation to reflect the reasonable compensation. To make this adjustment, you will need comparable salary data to determine what similar positions are being paid in the industry. Based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), you can select a data set (i.e., pick what year’s data you want to use), a state or territory, an area, and a job code, or search text.
Federal and State Case Law Summaries
Updated monthly and easily searchable by keyword, citation, date, or presiding judge.Summaries and the downloadable full case text are available for 2,600+ cases related to rulings on valuation, damages, expert testimony, Daubert challenges, discounting, and anything else that is valuation-related. They have been curated for cases that affect valuation standards and practice, and for financial forensics analysts called to serve as expert witnesses.
