Program Description
Part 2—This two-part webinar series provides a refresher course on both the modern portfolio and statistical theory underlying CAPM Beta. It lays out the theoretical derivation of Total Beta, and then it compares and contrasts the two concepts by means of a moderated live debate.
Learning Objectives
After completing this webinar, attendees will be able to:
- Articulate the basic theory underlying both CAPM Beta and Total Beta - Identify the differences between the two Betas - List the arguments for and against Total Beta - Identify the important models that are foundations to all valuation practices

Rod Burkert, CPA, ABV, CVA Mr. Rod Burkert is the founder of Burkert Valuation Advisors, LLC, a business valuation and litigation support firm. His assignments focus primarily on income/gift/estate matters, specializing in closely held companies and private investment partnerships. He also provides report review and project consulting services to assist attorneys and other practitioners with their engagements. Mr. Burkert is leveraging social media to build a mobile valuation consulting practice, allowing him to travel full time in an RV throughout the United States and Canada.

Sarah von Helfenstein, MBA, CVA A more than 30-year veteran of the start-up wars, Ms. Sarah von Helfenstein, has created, launched, and managed numbers of new initiatives inside/for established enterprises and on a stand-alone basis.
For the past twenty years, she has held a variety of roles within the financial valuation sector, all of which have involved change agency. During this time, she also participated in several tech start-ups (online education, social software, digital pen & paper), either as founder or part of the founding team. In addition, her work includes seminal research for the Department of Defense Office of Force Transformation in the valuation of information systems and human capital and application of real options to critical problems.
Ms. von Helfenstein has published/presented academic papers on theoretical finance, economics, and real options in the U.S. and internationally. She has also authored valuation courses and exams, developed valuation curricula and conferences, and edited a number of key valuation books.
She currently sits on the Appraisal Issues Task Force and the Valuation Uncertainty Project for the International Valuation Standards Council. She is a member of the editorial board of The Value Examiner®, a bimonthly publication for the valuation profession.
Ms. von Helfenstein received her MBA from DePaul University's Kellstadt Graduate School of Business and her B.A. from Randolph-Macon Women's College. She is a designated member of the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts™ (NACVA®).
Andrew Malec, PhD Dr. Andrew Malec is a managing director at O'Keefe. Prior to joining O'Keefe, Dr. Malec was a managing director of the Valuation, Litigation Advisory & Forensic Services Group at Gordon Advisors, PC. He has significant experience in the valuation & litigation advisory services industry including tenures with a national, premier financial advisory services firm, an international accounting and consulting firm, and co-founded his own corporate value consulting firm. Dr. Malec is a financial advisory services professional with demonstrated expertise in providing debt, derivative securities, enterprise value, equity, and intangible asset/intellectual property valuation opinions for corporate planning, financial reporting, taxation, transaction, litigation, and strategic planning purposes.
Dr. Malec also has significant experience in providing analysis and litigation advisory services to litigators, including but not limited to intellectual property infringement, securities litigation, and shareholder disputes. He has testified in state and federal courts and has extensively presented and published in the areas of financial valuation, economic damages, and corporate governance.
Dr. Malec holds a PhD in Economics from Wayne State University and is a graduate of University of Michigan, having earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He is a member of the Michigan Venture Capital Association and Licensing Executives Society. Dr. Malec is a faculty member for ICLE's Deposition Skills Workshop.
Gary Schurman, MBE, CFA, CPA, ABV Mr. Gary Schurman has over 25 years of experience in finance, accounting, and software development. He began his career at international accounting firm Deloitte & Touche, served as vice president mergers & acquisitions at Bay View Capital Corporation, a $6 billion publicly-held bank holding company, treasurer of California Thrift & Loan, a $750 million finance company that he helped take public in 1995 via an IPO, chief financial officer of several Silicon Valley start-ups, chief technology officer at Decisive Inc. where he authored the Company's on-line software products that it offers to Banks and Credit Unions, and most recently as a "Quant" for a Wall Street firm specializing in subprime CDOs.
Mr. Schurman received his Masters Degree in Business Economics (MBE) from the University of California at Santa Barbara and his BS in Business and Accounting from Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh. Mr. Schurman is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). |
