In a courtroom, the truth does not always speak for itself.Expert witnesses are often called upon to explain highly technical, complex, or nuanced information to a jury made up of everyday people with no background in accounting, forensics, valuation, medicine, or law. The biggest challenge is not what the expert knows; it is how they communicate it.
That is the driving philosophy behind The Power of Storytelling for the Expert Witness, a high-impact course co-presented by Michael Kaplan and Jessie Wilson. With nearly five decades of litigation and forensic accounting experience, Kaplan understands the stakes of courtroom communication better than most. Jessie Wilson, a professional performer and storytelling coach, brings deep expertise in translating authentic expression into powerful courtroom presence. Together, they deliver a practical, transformative workshop for expert witnesses across all fields.
This course breaks down the false dichotomy between fact and feeling. It demonstrates that being analytical and being emotionally clear are not mutually exclusive; they are both necessary for persuading a jury. Through real-world anecdotes, interactive exercises, and live coaching, participants learn to transform stiff, technical testimony into something memorable and persuasive.
A recurring theme in the course is that storytelling is not about acting or manipulation; it is about connection. Jurors are emotional decision-makers. They need to trust you, follow your logic, and remember your message. The course introduces the concept of “leading with the heart, supporting with the head”—a structure where you deliver your conclusion first in accessible terms, and then back it up with technical explanation.
Participants learn to analyze their delivery for clarity, authenticity, and impact. They practice refining their posture, vocal tone, pace, and eye contact. The course also shows how to respond effectively under cross-examination, avoiding overcomplicated responses and defensiveness.
Importantly, the course emphasizes that storytelling is a learnable skill. Through guided exercises and participant feedback, experts witness dramatic changes in delivery within minutes; proof that these techniques work. This is not about performing; it is about becoming the most effective version of the expert you already are.
Whether you are a veteran expert with dozens of cases under your belt or preparing for your first deposition, this course provides the tools and perspective needed to elevate your courtroom presence, make your message stick, and—most importantly—help the truth be heard.
After completing this course, attendees will be able to:

Integrating Storytelling Into Expert Testimony
This course will take a deep dive into the world of expert testimony, and how storytelling makes a difference. We will work with each attendee in the defining of the expert’s story, the integration of the expert’s work, experience, and opinions into the story, and strategic approach to telling the story in a manner that is professional and objective, but also compelling and supportive of theme of the case.
The Courtroom
The course will put things into action. We move into a courtroom setting where each attendee will take the witness stand and give expert testimony. We will guide each attendee through the delivery of their direct testimony including presentation of their qualifications, assumptions, methodology, evidence, analysis, and opinions in a manner that is both persuasive and compelling. Cross-examination of each expert will follow. After the testimony has concluded, our seasoned faculty members will provide a positive and constructive critique of each expert.
Financial forensics experts, business valuation experts, CPAs, professionals who serve as expert witnesses, and attorneys.
