A Primer on Establishing a Trust and its Taxation

Program Description
In this course, attendees will learn the following: trust basics and definition of a trust; understanding the document that created the trust; how trustees are determined and duties and powers of a trustee; irrevocable trusts, revocable or living trusts, and grantor trusts explained; taxation of trusts and tax return filing requirements; costs of establishing and maintaining a trust; illustrations of specific trusts and its use; trustee’s administration and investment responsibilities, and issues when an accountant or attorney is a trustee.

How You Will Benefit
After completing this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe how to acquire a thorough understanding of the basics and purposes of establishing a trust
  • Identify how trusts are administered, and taxed, and when they are appropriate for clients
Take Aways
The handout will be able to be used as a checklist when the accountant or attorney is confronted with a client that wants to establish a trust, or who becomes a beneficiary or trustee of a trust, or who receives a distribution from a trust.

Who Should Attend
Professionals that are not already working with trusts or who have cursory experience with trusts. Also experienced professionals that might want to see if they are not overlooking any details. Included will be some very sophisticated uses of trusts as a takeaway based on the speaker's experience.
