IBA’s Course 8002 is presented in two four-day segments. This course, together with IBA’s report writing (IBA1010) and Preparation for the CBA Written Exam (IBA1006) courses, form the critical components of business appraisal study required to qualify for IBA’s Certified Business Appraiser (CBA) credential. Course 8002A provides an in-depth introduction to the fundamentals of business appraisal.

What You Will Learn
Students learn about professional responsibility, IRS rulings and procedures (long considered the most important foundational information affecting the profession), engagement planning, financial analysis, industry and economic research, forecasting, and preliminary appraisal drafting.
Daily Schedule Days 1 and 2
Day 1
• Overview of business appraisal—contexts in which it operates
• Presentation of IRS rulings and procedures plus the ins and outs of Revenue Ruling 59-60
• IBA and other organization standards and ethics
• Guided learning through one of the profession’s leading texts, with a focus on best practices
• Financial statement analysis, the most critical analytical element of business appraisal
Day 2
• Practice management and development, including marketing, referrals, communications with prospects and clients, and engagement planning
• Initial stages of engagement practice, including how to gather appropriate information and documents
• Management interview and site visit
• Planning the report
• Continued review of text material and financial analysis
Daily Schedule Day 3 and 4
Day 3
• Economic and industry analysis
• Subject company analysis
• Analyzing and adjusting financial statements
• Class example of company financial analysis
Day 4
• Company financial analysis, working as a class enabling a “share the wealth” philosophy
• Forecasting: the class works a forecasting example together
• Individual analytical work—students work independently on financial statement analysis and adjustments, as well as income forecasting for a subject company
• Appraisal report writing
