When I received the email indicating I had been selected for this honor, two things came to mind. First, did they have the right person? So I checked the membership roster to make sure there wasn’t another member named Marc Bello. The second thought was how privileged I am to be affiliated with a tremendous organization such as NACVA and how fortunate I am to be surrounded by an incredible amount of talented members.

To begin my brief autobiography, I believe that my roots as a child have contributed to who and where I am today. The lesson I would like to share from my youth are the values learned from summer camp. Once I was able to make my bed, I went to overnight camp where I spent the next 12 summers for eight weeks a year. My experience at camp taught me responsibility, leadership, camaraderie, and spirit. The importance of friendship, integrity, laughter and hard work became core values which are extremely important to me today.

After college, with a job starting in September, I traveled with a friend in a 1987 Grand Fury for eight weeks around the county. It was an amazing experience. You can get quite an education living out of a tent and a car for eight weeks. The final stop on our trip was the summer camp I spoke of earlier. When I returned to camp I recognize the importance of setting goals for the future, but believe it is even more important remember our core values which ground us with the ability to achieve those goals.

Professionally, I always joke with people that it took me a good 10 years to find a profession I am passionate about and can admit I enjoy coming to work everyday. I began my professional career as an auditor, became a tax specialist, received a Master in Taxation, and worked in private industry before I focused 100% in the field of valuation. Having spent years as an understudy and now running a valuation practice at Edelstein & Company, LLP, I look forward to the challenges of the profession and the rewards to be achieved. To tell you a little about our valuation practice at Edelstein, we specialize in performing business valuations in the context of marital dissolution, financial reporting, gift and estate taxation, dissenting shareholder actions, and stock options. We also provide litigation support services as an expert witness in the areas of valuation, forensic accounting, lost profits, business interruptions, economic damages and taxation.

NACVA is a tremendous source for positive energy for professionals. This energy starts with people. The individuals at NACVA who work behind the scenes organizing these programs do a tremendous job; they are well organized, friendly and look out for us as members. The members with whom I have had the opportunity to be associated with I am honored and privileged for all your time, support and wisdom you have shared with me. I cherish the friendships I have made and the laughter and discussions we have.

I find one of the most rewarding aspects of my work is sharing my knowledge and passion for the industry with others. NACVA has given me that opportunity as an instructor for Current Updates in Valuation. I am currently serving a term on the Valuation Credentialing Board and look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the strength of this great organization. Finally as a source to grow intellectually, I have found the training programs and the instructors to be exceptional. The breadth of topics offered and the opportunities to learn new aspects of the industry are incredible.

To make this work, it would have been the biggest fault in my career if I did not mention my wife, Cindy and two daughters. Cindy has been my biggest supporter and has always been able to keep me grounded in those core values of friendship, laughter, integrity, and balance. As my two young daughters as they grow with age and wisdom, I can only hope they will continue to hide my luggage because they don’t want me to head to the airport on a Sunday afternoon.

Thank you again for this great honor, I look forward to many years of involvement with this fine organization.

Best,
Marc

After floundering around a bit with only the Schilt’s Risk Premium Analysis and the Black/Green Build-Up Summation Model (remember those?) as a guide, I did some research and found the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. I was very fortunate to attend the Fundamentals, Techniques & Theory training session right in my hometown of Baltimore and was introduced to the instructors and administrators that would become so much a part of my career (and my life) shortly thereafter.

In my first training session, I was immediately impressed with the content and delivery of the course materials. What had caused me to flounder was now beginning to make sense. I knew from the first day that I wanted to get involved with the organization and that business valuation for all types of businesses, not just medical practices, would be my specialty. At this point in my public accounting career I had been teaching a CPA review course for a number of years and I knew that, as my career moved to business valuation full time, that I would like to become an instructor in business valuation as well. After conveying my thoughts to the NACVA, I was soon serving as an instructor and was being rewarded with seeing the “light bulb illuminate” in so many candidates as they begin to understand the theory and process of valuation.

I expanded my involvement in the NACVA as I realized that being a part of the organization could greatly assist me in all aspects of my business valuation career. I was elected to serve on the Valuation Credentialing Board and soon became its Chairperson. This exposed me to a number of the organization’s Committees and their operations. And most recently, I was given the honor of being elected to the Executive Advisory Board, working with the organization at the top level and helping the NACVA with its continuing vision for the future.

But overall, what has impressed me the most is the people connected directly and indirectly to the NACVA. I know that I can always reach out to any one of the many colleagues (and some that I consider friends) that I have come to know in order to receive professional advice. The NACVA has made my work much easier.

A few years ago, my wife and I relocated to sunny, southern Florida where I continue to practice exclusively in the area of valuation. I have continued to expand my academic career by occasionally teaching accounting as an adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University (Go, Owls!). But I will always make time for the NACVA as a part of my professional life as my career would not be the same without the professionals within the organization. It’s been a great ride so far…
